Our office is located on the historic downtown square in Noblesville. We fondly refer to it as Mayberry with a flair. We have made our home in a hundred-plus-year-old building that we purchased and carefully brought back to life after decades of neglect. We always wanted to be somewhere a little different than a model home or a strip mall, and this clearly fits the bill. We labored to make this mess our home, and as usual we got a little more than we bargained for.

About Steve Stein:

Steve was born in 1969 in New Haven, Connecticut. His first toy was a Fisher Price tool set.

He grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, building backyard forts, fixing things, and working summers in construction and at a local hardware store.

In 1987 he graduated from Bloomington High School South where he won awards in physics for building toothpick bridges and paper airplanes.

Steve attended Indiana University in Bloomington from which he graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. He spent much of his time working with wood and metal, which he still loves to do today.

While in college he was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served as house manager for two years, fixing and caring for a house with over a hundred live-in members.

After graduation he started building his first home. With some blind faith displayed by his mother and father and with a large textbook on construction, he built--with his own hands--a vacation home for his parents on their 80 acres of land in rural Greene County, Indiana.

Once the project was completed, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, where he worked and played in the mountains. After a bit, he decided to return home to pursue a career in homebuilding. Even today, a big part of his heart remains in those mountains.

Back in Indiana, Steve took a job with an Indianapolis-based homebuilder with whom he spent the next five years producing homes on a mass scale. During that time he made a name for himself by running a "tight ship," expecting dedication to details and hard work from not only himself but his subcontractors. He gained much respect and climbed the ladder within the company. Those years exposed him to the good, the bad, and the ugly within the building industry. Overworked and underpaid, Steve decided to take a year off and travel the United States. He lived in a tent, moving from one national park to the next, while also working on a business plan. The solitude gave him perspective on life and work. As an added bonus, he met his wife Jackie in the process!

When he returned home to Indianapolis, he had a fresh outlook and was determined to start his own business. He ran Stein Enterprises, Inc. successfully for five years, doing mainly hands-on remodeling.

Still wanting more, he decided to persuade good friend and past co-worker, Ken McLaren, to leave his secure job and join him in building custom homes. Ken accepted the challenge, and Blue Door Builders was born. Having the same work ethic and dedication with his new venture, Steve was quickly awarded the nickname "Pickie" by his subcontractors.

Blue Door Builders has been Steve's passion for the past nine years. Building custom homes and working hard on large and small remodeling projects keeps him happy. Working with his hands to create and build continues to drive him both on the job and at home. His home workshop is a far cry from his original Fishers Price tool set, but he enjoys the high-tech versions just the same.

When he is not at work, Steve spends his time with his greatest love: his family. His most important and rewarding job is raising his two wonderful girls with his wife, Jackie. He claims they are the best things he has ever had a hand in creating, even though they are not made out of wood!

Blue Door Builders. . . there's so much I can say about this team, this company. I have lived in a variety of custom-built homes, most of which were built to spec by some of Indianapolis' finest, well-known builders.

Nearly five years ago I was interested in relocating from the Village of West Clay to near downtown Indianapolis. What a chore to try and find a high-caliber, custom-built home, finished and move-in ready. Call it luck or as I consider it, it was a blessing.

There it stood in the cold sunlight of a February afternoon. I immediately fell in love with the quality of this home, the unique and interesting add-ons, and the obvious care and detail in its construction.

A few months later, I was moving into a place I have called home for nearly five years. I met the team of two young men at closing and wondered how on earth at such young ages they could have the knowledge and experience to know the importance of home-building quality.

The quality and detail of construction and the infrastructure are exceptional. The best part is that they built this home without a buyer standing in the wings. There was no one checking on them daily to ensure the construction and finishing were of a high standard. It's just how they do business: professional quality with integrity.

I believe so much in the Blue Door team that I've asked them back on two occasions to provide upgrades. Of course, on par with their initial work, the upgrades are fantastic.

I would trust no other builder. It's that simple. Were I to build again, or if I need anything additional in or around my home, there's no question who I'll call.

Over the past ten years we have had Blue Door Builders perform a number of projects on two older homes, one in Broad Ripple and one in Meridian Kessler. In each case Blue Door Builders did a remarkable job making significant updates to the houses, while paying close attention to maintaining the character we liked so much about these older homes. The three largest projects were remodeling an old attic bathroom, completely finishing a basement that for the previous 60 years had been unusable space, and adding a second-floor master suite. We've always appreciated Blue Door Builders' attention to detail and their creative thinking.

Steve and Ken are very good about following through on what they promise in all facets of their work, including craftsmanship, timing, and cost. They have been very conscientious about minimizing our inconvenience and keeping a clean worksite. This was particularly important when we undertook the master suite addition just two months after having our first child. Blue Door Builders did such a good job of making sure that we were not inconvenienced and of working around our schedule. Most importantly, Steve and Ken have been honest and forthright in their dealings, and they do what they say they will do. We do not hesitate in giving Blue Door Builders our highest recommendation!

Hiring a builder or contractor will be the most important thing you do when taking on a large project like building a custom home or renovating your existing home. Please proceed cautiously and make sure you feel 100% comfortable with whomever you hire. This can best be achieved by asking the right questions and thoroughly getting to know the company and people you will be working with. No one walks into a job interview and starts negotiating money up front. Hiring a builder should be no different. Before you discuss costs, first make sure you are working with a qualified builder.

Blue Door Builders will do everything to make sure your project is a fun and an exciting experience, one that you will remember fondly for years to come. These discounts allow us to give you products and services under what you would pay directly, and we still make a living doing it. Sometimes people get confused and are afraid to ask if we do certain types of work. Here are some things we have heard from past clients that we hope to never hear from you.

1. "I didn't know you did that type of work."

Our reaction: "We do that type of work all the time."

Our reaction: "You are not bothering us. That is our job."

3. "I didn't think to call you about it."

Our reaction: "Please think of us as your main resource for all your home needs."

We want you to call us first. Some clients think just because we can build you a 7,000 square-foot custom home that we will not be available to help you with your smaller projects. That has never been the case. In fact, we pride ourselves on being able to accommodate most of your needs. We try hard to take even the smallest jobs. This way we know you are going to think of us each and every time you need something done. We are in the business of cultivating longterm relationships so that we can keep working for only the best people, as well as their friends and families. We would much rather have the chance to say, "Yes, we can help you," than to find out that you were taken advantage of or had a bad experience. We do not expect you to always to hire us, but if you were happy with our work in the past, or know someone who was, please consider us first.

Here are some examples of the other building services we provide. Did you know we can help you with?

*All types of insurance work, water damage, hail damage, etc. We evaluate your adjuster's report and then do our own evaluation to make sure you are getting everything you are owed.

*Creating a new entrance for your neighborhood, or working with your HOA to update things.

*Tree trimming and stump removal.

*Paving an existing drive or a road.

*Restoring your dirty tile by cleaning it with a high pressure machine, which is a cheaper option than replacement.

*Working with you to manage maintenance on your rental properties or getting properties ready to sell.

To most who know us, Blue Door Builders probably is not thought of as a commercial builder. We are mainly in the residential realm of building and remodeling. However, we do get our hands dirty with some commercial work. In the past we have taken on some very extensive commercial remodels which include:

An extensive restaurant build-out in a pre-existing space in the Village of West Clay.

Transforming a residential building into a commercial kitchen in downtown Carmel.

Jack's Pizza restaurant build-out in Carmel.

Extensive remodeling of a clothing store into a restaurant in Noblesville.

Office-space renovations in Noblesville.

While these projects may not be as extensive as building a large commercial building downtown, we strive to put the same quality in these remodels as someone would expect in their home. This is why we have a superior eye for details that might be overlooked by the big commercial builders. Building a commercial building or renovating a commercial space is really no different than any other job for us. There might be different codes or steps we have to take, but the path is the same. We take pride in doing things right; and if it is your business and livelihood, we know you want it to be perfect!
